Hi, I'm fairly new at making maille. I'm doing a european 8 in 1 bracelet with some failry small rings (I'm not good with gauges and types of metal). When I'm done I'd like to solder the rings closed. This may be a dumb question but can I just go to Sears and get a soldering gun to close the rings? Does it matter what type of metal? Once I get the soldering gun is it self-explanatory to use (I've never used one before)? If anyone can help I'll appreciate it.

I've always used a soldering IRON, not a soldering gun - I don't think it's tough to use, but I don't know how to use it, myself.

Good luck to you on your project. :)

A soldering gubasically a soldering iron, but I think the only solder you can use with them has lead in it, so you would probibly want to get some silver solder and use that (not too expensive, and has no lead) and use a propane or butane torch.
And, as if it needs to be repeated... don't solder galvy (galvanized steel, that might be spelled right)... besides the gasses I think it would look like crap...

also you might want to consider weaving the ring, then soldering. Then move onto the next ring. The constant heat from constant soldering might melt the previous soldering you worked so hard on! good luck! Very Happy
