Hello. Well I was just wondering about what you classify as weird. I mean I believe in auras and chakras. Hinduism, I also believe in aliens and a bunch of conspiracies. I also just jump from friends to friends (none real permanat). Everybody just finds me weird! So anywho why do people think your weird or stay a good 50 feet away? |

These things are weird IMO. I don't label people weird for believing in something unless their beliefs make them anti-social or something or make them hurt people or themselves.
I also hate it when someone comes along and tells me: i know why something in your/my life went wrong!coz' You didn't believe in God or the stars were missaligned or your karma had a funny color.
Unless people do the things above, i don't mind them. As far as i'm concerned ppl may believe in what they want, i don't care, because i 'm not part of a religion.

Everything ouside of one's normal realm of experiences is weird. Therefore, everything is weird to someone, conversley, everything is normal to someone.
However, Al is definitely Weird. :>

I find the English language very weird, even though I've been speaking it all my life! One of the few spelling rules that they managed to drill into my disinterested brain was the one about "I before E except after C." That one is definitely weird.

Personally, I think English is screwed up, not weird, but to take your point further, HerrB, say the following sentence out loud and then think about it: I wound the bandage around the wound.

Weird is not being weird in any way.
Weird is not having any vices.

CK, I think you've just topped one of my other favorites:
They're over there with their weird friends.
"They're," "there" and "their" all sound alike, but have different spellings and meanings.
"Their" and "friends" use the same vowels in the same order but sound quite different.
And then there's that "weird" word breaking the "I before E" rule again.
It's almost as bad as rules based "New Math." The answer you get depends on how you write out the problem. For example: Two plus two times five. Sounds simple enough, doesn't it?
2 + 2 x 5 = __
vs.
2
+2
x5
__
In the first example, going by the rules, you get twelve (12) where as in the second example you end up with twenty (20). Almost double the sum of the first example. ?How can this be?? I hear you ask. Well, the rule I alluded to states that 'you do the multiplication first.' It's as if you have parenthesis around the second part of the formula, like this:
2 + (2 x 5) = 2 + (10) = 12
The second way of writing essentially the same formula breaks the equation down into two parts like this:
2 + 2 = sum
sum of first equation x 5 = answer
2 + 2 = 4
4 x 5 = 20
Or to write it out as above:
2
+2
4
x5
20
But the mathematicians who make the rules will tell you that's wrong. Go figure...

Herr: Sorry, I got taught the 'new math' the whole time, so it makes sense to me to get 20 each time. :>
For further English tricks, my favorite is how 'ghoti' can be legimitately pronounced 'fish.'

Actually, it does make sense to get twenty, but twelve is the correct "by the rules" answer. Everyone I've mentioned this problem to has answered twenty, but the mathematician I heard ranting about it on the radio (NPR) insisted otherwise and the rules back him up.
BTW: Fish? You've lost me with that one...

i don't get why "new math" is weird. the princle you eluded to is 'order of operations'. there are many more rules to it than just multiplication first. in school, math was the only thing i understood. its really the only systematic language out there. every other subject is screwed somehow.

Here's a somewhat bazaar real world example of how the order of operations rule would mess things up:
Staying with the same formula we used in our last dissertation:
2 + 2 x 5 = __
Lets assume we're buying gloves for our family. For some reason the store we've gone to has them in a large bin priced separately at $2.00(US) per glove. (Bear with me here...) That makes a pair of gloves cost $4.00. Now if there are five people in your family you need five pairs of gloves. That's one pair (at $4) times 5 pairs. Let's also assume that the store we're at is in New Hampshire so we don't have to mess up the equation by figuring in sales tax. Now since the computer is down the store clerk might write out the sales slip as follows:
$2.00 left glove
+$2.00 right glove
$4.00 per pair of gloves
x 5 pairs
$20.00 total
The mathematician would explain how that's wrong using the order of operations rule thus:
$2.00 + $2.00 x 5 = $2.00 + ($10.00) = $12.00
He'd then plunk down on the counter a ten and two ones and get arrested for shoplifting $8.00 worth of gloves.
And my teachers thought I wasn't paying attention...

No, the mathematician would just point out that you are missing parentheses.
Correct equation: (2+2) * 5 = 20
Actually, for your glove example, I probably would have multiplied 2 by 2 instead of adding 2 and 2, giving the equation 2 * 2 * 5, which everyone can agree is 20 (hopefully).
If I would have been asked this equation verbally, I probably would have said 20. On paper, I definitely would say 12.
Hmmm. Does this make me weird?

But this mathematician is cheap! He was trying to use the rules to his advantage in hopes of saving $8.00 on the price of this winter's gloves. This is also why he was shopping in New Hampshire to avoid the sales tax...
