MAIL ISSUE POLL- Adding a History Forum

This poll arises from this discussion in Knitting Circle.
http://www.mailleartisans.org/board/viewtopic.php?t=15101
And replaces this poll.
http://www.mailleartisans.org/board/viewtopic.php?t=15119

There seems to be some confusion as to what an Issue Poll is. I was confused too, until I read the Charter.

"An issue poll can be initiated by any member in good standing of the M.A.I.L. community by posting a clearly labeled and worded poll to the discussion board with the subject line "MAIL ISSUE POLL: 'topic' ". This poll determines whether a vote will be taken. An issue poll is considered to be successful if a majority of those participating in the poll are in favor of initiating a vote on the issue presented in the poll. An issue poll must be acted on by the B.O.D. when a significant portion of the currently active membership have participated in the poll."

In other words, the poll is to gauge whether or not the membership believes an official vote should be held on the topic in question.

Thank you for reading this!

Thank you for the correction Lorraine and the help. The below statement from the bylaws leads me to believe that this IS the membership vote and if it is passed here the BOD takes action. Paraphrased from what I wrote in my reply to you on the other Issue Poll.

Am I incorrect?

My ONLY desire here is to see that your concerns are addressed in an official way MusicMan. You have every right to start an ISSUE POLL and I am honestly only trying to help you do it according to the charter.

I'm probably only mucking this up in my effort to help. If another admin with mod powers in Requests wishes to delete this poll and fix all this, I will not be offended.

Lorraine

I am sorry, I know that is what you are doing and I am not trying to start an argument. I am just trying to understand what the charter says. I interpreted what was written in a different way so I am only looking to learn the correct way to do things.

Lorraine, you forgot to sticky this thread.

MusicMan, this poll and your original unofficial poll will be useful for the BOD to create the final membership vote, assuming there is enough interest for one. The comments and ideas will help us make better options to decide how thing should be changed, for instance tagging/moving of old posts. Otherwise issue polls could be passed that the BOD doesn't have the time or resources to act on.

I don't have mod power in here to sticky anything. Sad

Can't you sticky your own thread?

The discussion in the other thread should contain a bit of insight into this...

Also, thread stickied, and other locked, per request.

I am mildly confused. This poll is a vote to see if we should hold a vote in the future? Why do we even do that? Why not just hold the one vote and go from there?

I'm sure there's a perfectly good reason behind this, I just don't know what it is.

The short answer is "because the MAIL charter says so." http://www.mailleartisans.org/management/charter.php#5.2

The long answer is that there are many, many established ways to hold a vote. For a longer discussion of voting, see Robert's Rules of Order: Pocket Manual of Rules Of Order For Deliberative Assemblies: Art. VI. Vote: http://www.gutenberg.org/files/9097/9097-8.txt (page 74)

There *is* a good reason. It's that any vote that could potentially change the structure or operations of M.A.I.L. must be worded very carefully, to prevent unintended consequences, like loopholes or misportrayals of intent. An issue poll lets any member propose a vote, but causes the Board of Directors to copy-edit the actual vote such that these side-effects can be avoided as much as possible.

Ok, that answers my question. Do we know what the future poll will hold? Is it just a yay/nay or will there be other options involved?
