Hey Dierdre,

Let me preface this by saying that I'm in no way questioning your judgment or actions, I'm just interested/confused.

What happened with this Martin situation? I only just noticed it because of BlessedWrath's post, but reading through, I don't see any bartering/haggling/negotiating, and I don't get where there was a bump.

Oh, and maybe I never read them all the way through before, but is this a new part of the rules? -

The Moderators have been given authority over the Trading room and are the last word in any debate. There is no one higher to take your issue too. Your Trading Room Moderators are Rygar and Deirdre. You will notice if you click on the link for "Trading Room Mods" there are several listed. Please note; the additional mods are for back up purposes only. DO NOT go to them if one of the main moderators has all ready told you "no".

Strictly speaking, this is in contradiction article 5 of our charter. Also, was the policy every voted on by the BOD?

for reference purposes. these are the threads i found concerning the creation of the trading room.

===================================
honestly, i think the thread martin had locked a couple days ago would have made an impression on him. it was an offer made to people who had already purchased units from him. does he not have their contact information?

in the most recent thread, he was asking for feedback on his units. this should be done privately to gain feedback, not publicly in an attempt to keep his thread active. we are not a storefront.

martin has been warned in the past about hijacking threads to sell his stuff elsewhere in the site. finding it will take some digging time, but D says she can do it.

i believe this was a result of cumulative actions.

Blaise, all valid points and I'm glad you brought this up.

No, there wasn't a lot of "haggling" going on in the thread, but, there was a lot of product discussion, which we do ask for people to do via PM or e-mail to stop unnecessary bumping. I let a lot of the discussion go on because this was a new product and I felt it was important for the community to have access to this information. However, there were minor arguments going on (granted, on the oldish side), and a lot of unnecessary questions and answers, i.e. "when is this going to ship?" "hey, just noticed mine shipped!" and "I shipped everyone's orders out today!" That last shipping update is the one I considered a blatant bump; so even if Martin wasn't in complete violation of rule 3, the spirit of the rule was broken, and he was definitely in violation of rule 4, and twice in the same thread.

Martin received his first warning from Cynake in the Riganator thread, on March 1st of this year, on the third page. He received his second warning from me in this thread: http://www.mailleartisans.org/board/viewtopic.php?t=13374 on May 24th. I deleted the body of his post, because it detailed an affiliate program people could join. There was no item for sale, and this is something he should have promoted on his own site or through a mailing list.

In addition, he has been warned twice by me about hijacking threads in the KC promoting his product. I've seen him warned by at least one other admin for the same behavior. I will dig up the threads a little later this evening when I have a bit more time.

Perhaps a months probation was excessive, but given how many warnings he's received in just the last three months, I felt he needed an excessive amount of probation to get the point. If you look at this thread, http://www.mailleartisans.org/board/viewtopic.php?t=13525 you'll see that it worked. He deleted his own post promoting his product in a thread it didn't need to be in.

As far as the rules, Rygar cobbled those together out of the admin threads where we all discussed them using the rules that we agreed to or that there were no objections to. That bit about the mods actions in the TR room being finite has been there since the rules post was first made. I wrote the liability and disclaimer information.

I'm willing to discuss a change there, but iirc we had all agreed on the mods responsible for the rules having the final say for consistency.

The last thing I'll add here is this: I had my reservations about leaving Martins thread up the day he posted it. He was not advertising a sale, he was not selling a limited number of the product, he was in effect using the TR as a store front, and using it only to advertise his site and product. I left it up because A) I felt the product benefited the community and at that point there were no other major rule infractions and B) I really don't like to mod with a heavy hand. I can accept my fault in this for allowing it to continue as long as it did, and as a result will probably be a little bit more "on the button" in that room from now on, unless this sparks a rule change.

*edited to add:

I found a few the threads I referenced above about Martin hijacking threads only to self promote:

I'll keep looking, there are more.

It does go on and on doesn't it. It's would be a bit like me putting a link in every time someone asks about jewellery. Wouldn't be so bad if he linked other resources as well. And the link is in his sig so why post it over and over.

i wouldn't even mind him putting a price point in his signature as long as the body of his post wasn't "look at my sig."
